NIH – Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach illness that spreads quickly through contact with infected people or contaminated food, water, and surfaces. While no vaccine is currently available, several are being developed and tested.
NIH-funded researchers are studying the virus to understand how cells respond to infection and to test antiviral treatments that could block it, and in the meantime, doctors advise people with norovirus symptoms to stay home for 48 hours and avoid contact with others when possible.
