One Woman’s Rise to VA Medical Center Director

U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs – Earning two Presidential Meritorious Rank Awards during her nearly 40-year career, Joan S. Kershner was a VA trailblazer and U.S. Army Veteran who became one of the first five women to lead a VA Medical Center.

Kershner’s medical career began at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C., just weeks after World War II ended. And in January 1976, she was selected to serve as Director of the VA hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.
