Spiritual care in supporting homeless Veterans

VA News – For a Veteran facing homelessness, spiritual care is not a secondary concern to address once housing is secured, it is often the steady source of strength that helps them endure the most difficult days of instability.

Homelessness can inflict deep spiritual wounds that medicine alone cannot heal. The VA approaches a Veteran’s path to stability as an interconnected, whole-health journey. Common challenges faced by Veterans experiencing homelessness include:

  • Abandonment: Feeling isolated and forgotten by others
  • Loss of self: Identity overshadowed by the struggle to survive
  • Value conflict: A painful gap between who they are and their current reality
